It seem like an exciting time for aspiring actors in the city, with Bollywood film shoots in Lucknow becoming frequent, and local business houses financing low-budget films shot here to avail the government subsidy. There are auditions for films happening in Lucknow almost the whole year round now, but most of them are fake.
With several films up for shoot in Lucknow this summer, here\’s what you need to know about adutions in the city before you land up for one:\’75% of the auditions are fake\’
\”We have become used to it now.\” says Kirtika Dubben, who is active on Lucknow\’s theatre scene, when asked whether she has encountered a fake audition. \”In July last year, a team claiming to be from a TV channel conducted an audition here for the lead roles in a mythological serial. Later, when we tried to inquire about the result of the audition, the local coordinators said they had no clue about the team. Similarly, a team from another TV channel came here for auditions a while ago, they also turned out to be fake,\” she shares.
\”Abhi 15 din pehle ek hotel mein audition hua tha, that was fake,\” says Atul Krishna Bhatia, also an aspiring actor, \”I have apperead for some 20-25 auditions in Lucknow, which turned out to be fake. Ab toh audition ka management dekh kar hi pata lag jata hai ki woh fake hai ya genuine! These people don\’t even share their contact details, they say, \’kuchh hoga toh bataa denge\’. We want work so whenever we get a call for an audition we go for it without giving it a second thought.\”
Aditi Dixit, another budding actor from the city and a theatre artist, also shares a similar experience. \”I have given countless auditions for movies and films in Lucknow. But most of the times, they turned out to be fake. When we tried contacting them for the result, our calls went unanswered,\” she says.
\”Fake auditions are becoming very common in Lucknow,\” claims Dicky Singh, a line producer from the city, who has coordinated for many of the Bollywood movies shot here. \”I remember during the shoot of Bullett Raja in Lucknow, a group was busted for conducting fake auditions in the name of the movie. They auditioned only girls and collected their contact details, when they had no association with the film at all\” shares Dicky, adding, \”Around 75% of the auditions that happen in the city are fake. While low-budget films made locally have increased the count of auditions, now it has become very easy to conduct auditions in the name of any random movie.\”
\’Nobody wants to gamble money on fresh talent\’
Films made entirely in the city by local production houses might sound encouraging to aspiring actors, but the fact is auditions rarely happen for lead roles, which still go to established actors or relatives of the film\’s producers. You can try for a second lead or character role, or even a junior artist. \”In March-April, some nine films are lined up for shooting in the city,\” says line producer SM Haider Zaidi, who was auditioning for a movie called Dilawar Ka Flower at a hotel in the city when we contacted him, \”But auditions for lead roles has never happened in Lucknow, be it a local production or from Mumbai. The local coordinator gets paid for arranging artists for small roles, and in return he charges 30% commission from the artist.\”

They charge several lakhs, depending upon our requirement for casting, who in turn contact local agents for artists. At all levels, 20% commission is being charged from the artists for bringing work to them.\”
